Yesterday I noticed they had transformed the "holiday aisle" into Halloween candy. I watched a woman nearly lose her teeth with excitement when she noticed same.

...that's what you think.

The omission of PWBA is remarkable, considering how much graduate school resembles a love story, set in a carnival atmosphere.

in terms of contemporary novels, i'd like to drop an auster or a mcewan for a lethem.

Coetzee????? WHAT THE EFF!

Other reasons that this list invalidates itself:

1) There are only thirteen books pre-1700. A quick hint: more than 1.3% of the world's great fiction was written prior to 1700.

2) Prominent Joyces: Joyce Carol Oates (4 novels). James Joyce (3). We report, you decide.

3) They left out non-Western novels. I am thinking here particularly of the Tale of Genji, which is to the East what Homer was to the West.

4) He has horrendous taste in contemporary novels. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Michel Houllebecq, the worst of DeLillo and Rushdie (the Body Artist and Fury), Chuck Palahniuk. Then there's House of Leaves, which is hardly a novel at all.
